摩天楼オペラ (Matenrou Opera) – acedia
acedia

Matenrou Opera’s new single after recently coming into my grasp has received high positive feedback from the majority of fans. Recent releases by Matenrou Opera haven’t been up to scratch in my opinion as with most singles they release, they only include a few good songs. Hopefully acedia will change this trend.
Hiai to Melancholy
The intro to this song is actually one of my favourite sections. It has a pretty distorted sound that has a section of the song changed around a tad. This pretty much lets you know from the beginning, ‘this is a good song.’
It gets pretty heavy after this with the traditional Matenrou synth in the background.
Guitars + Synth + Drums = Epic.
It’s a simple equation that Matenrou often follow. It works.
After that, this song is pretty self explanatory. Sono’s vocals are great as always and follow the rythm of the guitars throughout the verses.
The chorus (I think) is in English for the start. I wouldn’t know. I’m pretty sure this isn’t normal for Sono and as cool as it sounds, I’d rather he stayed in the Japanese language as it follows the style of their music more closesly.
Now and again, Matenrou through in a guitar solo in their songs and this time is no different. It’s necessary and it fits very well, as short as it is.
The rest of the song follows the same template and is overall positive for the band who have recently failed to impress me like they used to.

Faust
Quite possibly one of their best intros ever. It’s astonishgly epic with heavy guitars and an organ that really show’s what they’re all about. The drums are quite possibly the best thing though. Yuu goes crazy and I straight up love it. After the intro, Anzi links it to the verse with a guitar scale that goes up and then down. It continues throughout the start of the verse and it really does sound like something the band have put a lot of thought into. The instruments are quite honestly at their best in the start/middle of the song. Sono’s good as per ususal and sticks in with his Japanese again, this works better with the song.
The chorus is okay, I like it. It’s pretty simple and is used for the majority of the second half of the song. Faust is a great song and so far this single is extremely promising.

Lawn Daisy
In the third song of the single, there is a distinct change. It almost seems ‘cheerier’. The intro is decent I guess but nothing in comparison to the previous two song.
After the intro, there’s a heavy guitar build up, it got me excited at first. Expecting something good, I listened eagerly and then…THEN, here it comes.
“Oh God.”
Sono bursts out in joy and happiness.
I really can’t stand it. The song for any fans of Oshare Kei would be great but after 2 songs of sheer heavy greatness, it does not fit.
I can’t listen to this anymore. With a really cheesy synth solo, this song nails its coffin shut for me. I just can’t write more because I’m just going to insult it to the point of stupidity. It’s just far too happy after such a good start. I was really expecting this solo to be amazing throughout but I’m bitterly dissapointed.
Really though, what should I expect with a title like ‘Lawn Daisy’. Oh dear.
Sorry if you like it. <3

Overall, the single is 2/3rds great. The first and second songs are promising for the band and this most certainly pleasantly surpirsed me. It got kind of ruined by Lawn Daisy though. However, it’s a good single and I definately suggest you get it and listen. Who knows, maybe Lawn Daisy might grow on me.
